Radiology Coding

I was just practicing some radiology questions and I am a bit confused by some of the answers. Here is an example

Examination of: Chest
Clinical Symptoms: Pneumonia
PA & LATERAL CHEST X-RAY WITH FLOROSCOPY: Ventilation within the lung field has improved compared with previous study.

c. 71023-26, 486
d. 71023, 486

I chose ""d. because the question did not ask to code the professional only. The answer given was "c". Am I missing something here?

I have to agree with you, Denise. I do not see anything that is asking to code the modifier -26 which is the professional component.

Thanks for your comment Carolyn. So this is what it is. I realize the questions were pulled from Carol Burke's Review Book and put in a handout. At the begining of her exam it states to code only the professional component unless directed otherwise and that was omitted from the handout.

Can you tell us a bit about your background? For example, are you a certified coder who is specializing in Radiology, or are you not certified but have some relevant training, or are you brand new to coding and need to learn the basics? Are you well versed in medical terminology and anatomy? If not, it is important to learn these subjects.

Coding Certification offers a number of courses for beginning coders such as Medical terminology and Anatomy, and Physician Based Medical Coding which will prepare you for the CPC certification exam. Radiology and all the main areas of coding are taught in this course for physician based coding.

A great place to start is our main website's home page, scroll down to the bottom and click on the image for "FREE CODING TOOLS & DOWNLOADS". On that page, scroll down and click on the image for any of the free downloads that pique your interest.

Are you studying medical coding on your own? You can find lots of helpful information on www.cco.us! It will be worth your while to check it out. We have lots of free information, free webinars, and also courses that you can purchase. If you want to learn Medical Coding and prepare for certification and/or a job, taking a Medical Coding course is a necessity, IMO.

Just like any profession, there is a lot to learn before you become proficient. I studied for many months before I took my exam. There is no instantaneous way to learn all that you need to know!!! There is no "quick way" document I can post here for you.
