As a medical billing instructor, I am commonly asked if it’s important to choose an expensive medical billing training program that has regional accreditation. Many careers do demand extensive training and choosing a regionally accredited entity could be a wise idea. However, medical billing training is actually pretty short in duration. It takes about 12-16 weeks to learn the skill set necessary to perform on the job at an entry level. I’ve seen some entities offering medical billing training for many thousands of dollars. As an educator, I know that this career field does not require a long training time nor is it necessary to spend thousands of dollars on training. A good medical billing program should contain a good textbook, online learning components, and a qualified instructor to be available for questions. If one has not had medical terminology training then there should be options for learning it within the medical billing course.

Medical billing is one of the few careers that offers a reasonable starting wage of between $10-$15 an hour with a short duration of training time. The cost for medical billing training should not reach into thousands of dollars. Learning to use medical billing software is usually done on the job. However, some courses will offer demonstration versions of popular software to get a “feel” for it. However, learning to use the software should not be the focus of a good medical billing program because every facility will use a different software package. It’s impossible to train on all available medical billing software packages available, so a brief introduction of how to enter data is all that is necessary.
When looking for medical billing training, choose a program that offers a solid text, good online components, a qualified instructor, and that offers affordability in the training fees.
