For the past 20 years, Rosetta Dellatte has worked for an oral surgeon, Dr. John S. McIntyre D.M.D, in Brooklyn, NY. She is currently the front desk supervisor and also does all the billing and coding for dental and medical insurance. She is currently pursuing her CPC credential, so we took this opportunity to get to know her a little better.

Medical Coder Profile: Rosetta Dellatte

Do you use paper manuals or encoders? I use paper manuals, but have tried some encoders. The AAPC recently offered its AAPC Coder with a free trial and I loved it. It was beautifully laid out and easy to maneuver. If my practice was multi-physician, I would definitely consider an encoder.

Do you feel the AAPC is doing enough in the area of specialty credentials? Yes. They seem to have a wide variety of options.

Tell us about your experience with CodingCertification.org. I found CodingCertification.org while searching for medical coding information on YouTube. I went to their website and registered for one of their free monthly webinars. I loved the vibe of the webinar. It was educational, but also fun to attend. And, at the CCO website, you will also find a bunch of free guides and tools available for download. I am always impressed with all that CCO has to offer. Additionally, I want to obtain the CPC credential, so I am enrolled in their Physician-Based Coding course (PBC) which includes the Blitz. (Note: The monthly webinar is also worth 1 free CEU once you are certified. And, if you are not available to attend the monthly webinar, no worries, you can become a member of the replay club and listen to the webinar at your convenience. Also, as a PBC student. I have access to a weekly educational webinar with my own personal CCO coach and I am a member of the CCO Discussion Forum. This is a great place to ask questions and to get feedback from fellow members. I have so much confidence in CodingCertification.org that I have now become one of their affiliates!

What do you like most about medical coding? I love all that medical coding has to offer. It’s a field that is never boring; there is always something new to learn. That said, it can also be very challenging at times because it’s important to keep up with all the changes. Medical coding is definitely a continuous learning experience.

What advice can you offer to people who are interested in a career in medical coding? Become a member of your local AAPC Chapter and go to chapter meetings. Join the CodingCertification.org discussion board; join the various medical coding groups on social media; join LinkedIn and network. These days there is so much information at our fingertips.

What are your future career plans? Once I become CPC-certified, I would like to do some oral surgery coding consulting. I think oral surgery is one of those mysterious specialties. One misconception is that certain procedures are considered dental, but depending on the diagnosis, most of the time procedures are considered medical. With oral surgery, I have used codes from sections in E&M, anesthesia, integumentary, musculoskeletal, radiology and HCPCS, but would also love to code for those specialties individually.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Most of my time outside of work consists of activities with my children and husband. I’ve been married to my soul mate, Frank, since 2000. We have two beautiful children: Jenna, 9 and Frankie, 3

How do you think your personality helps you in your job? Because of my easy-going and caring personality, I am able to get along with all coworkers and patients. At work, I am self-directed, even though I usually work independently and am confident in what I do; I also welcome input from my peers.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself. Well, my family and I love Disneyworld. Some of our most memorable family memories have been created there. I consider myself a “Disneyworld expert.”

Rosetta,
I enjoyed your medical coder profile. You are so right about oral surgery some parts of it can be medical. I learned that from just the things my hubby had done over the years and from myself as well.
