Hi, Just wanted to share with everyone how I finally landed an Xternship opportunity through the AAPC. I'm in Massachusetts so it may be different per state. I found it impossible to find one because all the ones listed on the AAPC site were no longer in the program. So, I knew I wasn't ready to get into the real world before getting my feet wet, I was determined to get an Intership/Xternship. Each time I went to a doctors office I asked the girls behind the desk about their coding and if they knew anyone who needed one. These are people that know people and did direct me in a few places. Nothing turned out but I went for an interview at a primary care physician's office and he wasn't even looking for a coder! Does anybody ready my resume!!!!! I told him I wasn't a medical assistant but a coder and told him about the AAPC Xternship. He said he goes through the schools to find interns and he had to fire one because she lost him a lot of money. So I cringe and blurt it out anyway. I asked if he'd be interested in mentoring me through the AAPC. He kind of looked at me and said maybe. So I came home and wrote him a letter along with the letter from the AAPC and he signed up the next day. Called me back for another interview and I start Thursday! I almost fell over when he told me he'll be training me himself on billing. I said, I'm not a biller and he said I know. So wish me luck because I don't think this is going to be easy. But a doctor willing to train me I'm floored. So my advice is if there is a doctor's office that you want to work in, send a letter with the information from the AAPC website or ask to speak to the doctor directly. You never know if you don't try!!! Sorry this is long winded but I also write novels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Happy internship hunting.
