ICD-9-CM Hospital Inpatient Coding

The following question comes from an exam and I am a little puzzled on how do I define on what takes precedence over the other as far as codes go?

Question: Of the following, which code would take precedence over the other?

I will not give the multiple choice of answers given because it is an exam question that is on my exam from my school and I refuse to cheat.

Thanking you in advance.

Sparky,

I think we need the actual question ;)

Laureen,

That is the actual question on the exam, no other detail information just four choices of codes. That's why I can't wait to finalize my studies with Penn Foster. The materials they provide are not the greatest. I am saving up to purchase from this website and AAPC.

I think you'll have to post the choices in order for us to help you with this one. Otherwise we'd have to teach our whole ICD course in one post and that is not feasible obviously.

Ok, here are the choices..........

A. 072.0 over 033.0

B. 595.0 over 131.09

C. 486 over 480

D. 112.2 over 599.0

I don't have to look up the codes and I know what they are wanting you to understand. This is going to be a question to see if you know which code is listed first. When you are coding if you see a code that states, "Code in addition" then you know that is listed second. If you see a code that states, "Code first" then you know it is the first listed code.

So, which one of these codes is in the proper place? This is not a very good questions. The term "over" is not a coding term.

Instead of taking an entire coding course again if you look at the Blitz videos it explains this concept very well. Here is a link to check out the Blitz Videos.

I want to thank you and Laureen. I know this question is not very good, this is what I have been dealing with throughout my course. Just trying to get through it, I will be purchasing the Blitz Videos hopefully very soon, financial my hands are tied right now. So I am doing my best. Thanks again and maybe I will come across questions that have more meaning then those through Penn Foster. I am disappointed in Penn Foster's courses and the way handle their materials. I will be attending the webinar on 01/17/13. See you then.

So glad you are going to make the Webinar. Do you use the Twitter chat as well? That has been rather fun.

No, I'm sorry I don't Twitter nor Facebook. I am a very private person when it comes to socialize networking. This forum and AAPC forum are the only two I can trust with networking.

No what you mean. I don't do as much as some of my friends. There are some naive people out there. You have to be careful.

You are so right. Too many individuals that are cruel to the touch and harm innocent ones on a mental stage.

You do have to be careful and know who your friends are. Most of my friends now are my fellow coders--people that I have met on this forum, in my coding groups on LinkedIn and Facebook, and even in my AAPC chapter.

I can say yes, I am finding true friendship here, I am grateful to have the support from everyone on this forum. I did not receive that from the local chapter in my area. I went to one meeting and I did not feel welcomed, like I was invading their space. I don't know if the chapter still exists, it was only a handful that attended. I just want to say "THANK YOU" to everyone here. You made me feel welcome and I am part of this community.

That's so great to hear Sparky. Our aim is to make people especially our students feel "warm and fuzzy" o_O
