I am having a little trouble on this practice question, maybe I'm only over thinking. Can you help?
Thank you

A 23 year old male who previously suffered a metacarpal fracture of the left hand, 2nd metacarpal bone, as the result of a gunshot wound develops a nunonion of the metacarpal.

Alicia presented this question in the December 2013 Q&A Webinar. Here's a quick answer:

Look up Fracture, metacarpal, second which point to S62.30-.

The sixth digit would be 1 for unspecified fracture of second metacarpal bone, left hand.

The seventh digit would be K for subsequent encounter for fracture with nonunion.

Answer: S62.301K

You do not have to document that the fracture was caused by a gunshot wound on a subsequent visit. Since we don’t know the circumstances of the type of gunshot wound (such as assault, or intentional self-harm, etc.) the gunshot part of the description should not be coded.
