I want to begin a program for Medical Coding. But, I am concerned that without the Billing portion that I will not be as 'hireable'. Is this true and will it be more challenging? Thank you.

Understanding where coding fits into the whole revenue cycle is important. You can take a billing course for that but you can also learn on your own. Our medical coding program starts out with the first chapter on general billing and reimbursement and compliance issues you need to understand on a general level. This sets the stage for how coding fits in.

That being said we are getting several requests to bring back our billing course I had 7 years ago so we have that in the works. Probably the last quarter of 2013 it will be released.

Happy studying!

I don't think accounting would be as good as a billing course which kinda covers accounting from a insurance billing perspective not an entire practice i.e.. payroll etc. basis.

I will be looking for that, too. (Now I'm hoping my computer isn't about to go out on me-it's acting up, and I'm not a computer geek!)

I like it too. Sounds as if it would be more approachable than almost 600 pp of insurance info.--what I'm working on. Wonderful to have CCo as a resource.

I along with two other instructors taught billing courses at the college. There is a lot to learn but like Laureen said, after you know the basics most of this is on the job training. Keeping communication open between you and the payer is how you do this. They are willing to work with you because they want things to run smoothly as well. There is a big turn over rate in billing departments it seemed to me. I suspect because it is a type of work that is like riding a behemoth. It changes a lot and you have to stay on top of it.

What really helps is to have a person who understands both coding and billing because they can see the front and back end of a claim. Now the AAPC has a credential for billing. This is HUGE. New credentials take a little while to get out into the public but it will not be long. How lucky are you as CCO people because Laureen did billing for a long time and is very knowledgeable. When this is added to CCO you will be getting key information that is practical AND her fabulous videos spice up your learning. Honestly, that is great because I tend to think billing is dull as dirt. (did I type that out loud?)

I will also be looking forward to the billing course. Will that help someone who is thinking about the CPB certification?

I will add I am also looking forward to the billing course. It's seems to me around here where I live there are more billing jobs than coding.

Alicia covered the difference between Billing and Coding in the July 2014 Q&A Webinar. She also talked about how the coder and the biller work together.

Join the CCO Club if you would like to have the full transcript, answer sheets, access to the recording, and a chance to earn an AAPC CEU. You will also get access to all the available monthly Q&A webinar resources when you join the CCO Club!
