When a person has an accident while wearing a helmet they don't usually remove the helmet. Way back when I was an EMT we made sure we had an open airway and if so taped the helmet to the backboard and transported. Not only does it help secure the C spine but it allows the ER doc to see the damage to the helmet. This paints a picture for that physician of possible injuries.

What types of injuries would you suspect if a patient had to have a helmet removed? Not just C spine injuries. There are a lot more. Share your thoughts.

Here is how they remove a helmet in the ER if the person has pain in the neck while attempting to remove the helmet.

It sounds like the patient had some possible neck pain because he had a neck brace on. It also sounds like his head was hurting from the removal of the helmet.

Agreed! You will have to go to YouTube and read the comments to see the outcome. I think he was sent home that night if I remember right.
