gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute duodenal ulcer

Hi guys,

For this case:

gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute duodenal ulcer

How would you assign the ICD-9-CM code?

Here's what I do:

ulcer --> duodenal --> acute -->with hemorrhage

After verifying the information in the tabular list, I got 532.00.

Would you approach this any differently?

I did try to start with the main term "bleeding." However, I don't think it led me to the right part.

Thanks.

If you go to the index and look up bleeding/ gastrointestinal it directs you to 578.9. But there is a tip that says "Assign 578.9 if the physician does not establish a causal link between GI bleeding and any possible causes for on endoscopy." The physician did establish the cause to be the acute duodenal ulcer so 532.00 is the correct code.

532.00 Acute duodenal ulcer with hemorrhage without obstruction
578.9 Hemorrhage of gastrointestinal tract unspecified (but the tip steers us away)

Yes, you have to try different approaches sometimes to get to the correct code!
