CPT BMP ordered with CMP

If a BMP is ordered with a CMP, the guidelines state to just code the CMP code because it has the same and greater amount of tests.

My question is if the BMP is not specified as Calcium ionized or total, how do we know which test panel to use? The CMP test panel has Calcium total, but not Calcium ionized, which means an extra code would be used if it were ionized.

Thanks,

Chaim

If you can't query the doctor for better documentation, code 80053 Comprehensive metabolic panel. It includes the "Calcium, total "
and there was no documentation specifying that a "Calcium, ionized" test should be done, so we can assume the lab did not do it. I suppose a particular lab could have some sort of understanding that "BMP for our lab" means do the Calcium, ionized version of BMP, but if that is so, you would know this practice, have the memo that documents this, and would code accordingly.

My question is based on a practice exam, in which the type of BMP is not specified, and in the CPT manuel, there are two BMP panels.

Thank you for the help. :)

Yes, there are two "BMP" panels. I still say go with 80053. I also would say the test question leaves something to be desired! What does the rationale say for this question?
