An experienced medical biller can work as medical billing advocate. A medical billing advocate works for a company that offers services to consumers to help lower their out-0f-pocket healthcare costs.  Medical billing advocates usually have several years of experience working in the medical billing career field; however, a new medical biller may be able to land such a position.

The medical billing advocate works with the hospital and insurance company on the patient’s behalf to help negotiate to lower the bills and/or to get the insurance company to cover more  charges. The appeal the costs associated with a hospital stay. For example, they review the patient’s bill to see if there are medical billing errors such as over-charges, charges for tests that were cancelled, uncommonly high charges, etc. They will then work with the hospital and insurance company to attempt to lower charges and get more paid.

With skyrocketing healthcare costs being of major concern to most consumers it could be beneficial to seek the services of a medical billing advocate.  What a medical billing advocate company would charge a consumer is likely to be based on the extent of the hospital stay, charges during the stay, and the amount of savings the advocate is able to recover for the consumer.  Medical billing advocates themselves can make  a good deal of money as they usually are people who have been in the field for a long time and carry high-level certifications through professional organizations such as American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).   If this is a career path that you are interested in, then learn everything you can about medical billing, become certified, and get a few years’ experience under your belt.   The medical billing career field offers many opportunities as  a medical biller for a facility, working for an insurance company,  auditing, and medical billing advocate.
